How to Make Lashes Look Longer

The recent eye makeup has seen a modest alteration. The long, fluttering eyelashes of celebs and your favourite social media stars are no longer always the result of painstakingly cared-for fake eyelashes or eyelash extensions. In fact, a lot of people would say they are wearing either no mascara at all or just one coat.

They would essentially be telling the truth. Instead, the credit for their long, flawlessly curled lashes goes to a new breed of eyelash serums, lengthening mascaras, and lifting treatments that provide a natural-looking alternative to falsies at a time when wearing no makeup is the in thing, but most people don't want to go barefaced.

I love makeup and sometimes I feel like my lashes are holding me back. I often yearn for long, eye-catching lashes that can carry a look, whether they're intended to be the main attraction or not, whether I'm sporting a strong, colourful eye or a no-makeup cosmetic look.

How to lengthen your eyelashes, as recommended by celebrity makeup artists

1. Place the root of your mascara on: Ava DuVernay and Angela Bassett's makeup artist, Aunique, does this trick in two steps. She begins by coating each eye with mascara, from root to tip. She follows up by applying a second coat, starting at the tip and working her way down to the root, which she claims lengthens and pulls out the lashes.

2. Apply a black liner to your upper water line (also known as the pink area under your lashes) and smudge it into your lash line, according to Stern and Aunique. Aunique uses the MAC Cosmetics Kohl Power Eye Pencil in Feline ($19) for this.

3.Use a mascara that has a thin, fine-toothed wand for best results. According to Stern, "when you have short lashes choosing a mascara wand that has that like extremely tiny wand is important." When working with something that feels short, precision is helpful. Both the Clinique High-Impact Mascara ($20) and the Rimmel London ScandalEyes Wow Wings ($8) mascara are favourites of Aunique's.

4. Apply lash primer: According to Stern, it "works more in the realm of thickness and volume vs length." When you apply conditioner to your hair, the hair follicles are filled, giving the impression that the hair is slightly thicker. The DiorShow Maximizer 3D ($30) is her favourite.

5. Apply a few individual lashes: Stern advises applying one or two individual lashes, such as these Ardell Soft Touch Knot-Free Eyelashes ($9), to the outside corners of your eyes to create a fluttery, seductive look.

6. Use white or beige to line your upper water line: According to Stern, black on the water line will give you a more sexier, smouldering eye than white or beige will.

She advises using the lighter liner to both your upper and lower water lines because it adds contrast and dimension, which makes the lashes appear darker and bolder.

7. Curl your eyelashes. According to Stern, "I honestly think curling the lashes makes a tremendous impact." "By redirecting, you know, the natural sort of where the lash rests, it gives even the small lash some curve and some extension."

8.Try a natural-looking false lash instead: Aunique, who makes her own eyelash extensions, suggests the Julee Lash ($18), which she says is extremely lightweight and realistic-looking. She also says that because the band is so lightweight, they are simpler to put on.

For someone who just wants to have something to apply and seem like they have thick lashes, Aunique adds, "[It's excellent] since it's not too dominating for the face."

9. Use a treatment that will lengthen your lashes to condition them. Stern swears by Epicuren Discover Eye Makeup Remover ($32), which has peptides that will thicken and lengthen your lashes.

At the end of the night, Stern says, she'll wash off her makeup or the makeup of her customers. She'll take a tiny bit of the leftover product and gently massage her lash line. "I am definitely feeling a difference, and I've probably been using it for about six months now."

10. Draw a few tiny lashes on the inner and outer corners of your eyes. Stern loves to imitate Twiggy by using a liquid liner and a very fine brush to draw a few tiny lashes on the inner and outer corners of her eyes.

The key, according to Stern, is to be unobtrusive and to keep enough of Q-tips and eye makeup remover nearby. "It's not like you're getting interested in attending a school for theatrical makeup. Simply by emphasising it with a liquid line, the corner lash is virtually extended somewhat."

On the outside and inside corners of your eyes, flick one or two tiny lines. Your lower lashes can also get a few extra lines. Laura Mercier Caviar Intense Ink Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner ($28) and Chanel Intense Longwear Eyeliner Pen ($35) are Stern's go-to products.
